Local History

On December 7, 1985, Jeanette Ellis scheduled a meeting of thirteen women to discuss the idea of organizing a section of the National Council of Negro Women in the City and Valley of Pomona.  After two hours of discussion, the group decided to bring this idea into reality.  During the next meeting, held on December 15, 1985 at Macedonia Baptist Church, Pomona, California,  twenty-three women joined the organization.  By April 1986, fifty paid members existed.  The Pomona Valley Section of National Council of Negro Women was chartered in May 1986.

Jeanette Ellis-Royston

Jeanette Ellis-Royston has devoted her life to community service and encouraging others,
through her leadership to organize and work with other community leaders is the high light of her success. In 1985 she met with a group of women at the International House of Pancake in Pomona to start the Pomona Valley Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. This was just the beginning of her Legacy; she was the catalyst, organizer and founder of Pomona Valley Section. Served as President for 6 years; she is a life member and a part of the Life Member Guild.

In 1990 she charted buses from Pomona to Los Angeles, to welcome President, Nelson Mandela. She worked with other community leaders to bring about the “Get About Bus“ Transportation for the disable and senior citizens in the Pomona Valley area and surrounding cities to enable them to get to and from doctor appointments. She became involved with NAACP to establish the Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Project which is still in existence today.

In 1992-94 initiated the Grandparent Program at the Prototype Women’s Center. Along with raising 9 foster care boys she also earned a B.S. degree in Education and her California Teaching Credential. Mrs. Royston is responsible for hundreds of young adults getting jobs in the Health Care Field throughout the State. She currently has a license
to teach CPR and First Aid from the American Heart Association. Her high energy and positive attitude keeps her fully involved with Order of Eastern Star, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace, member of Macedonia Baptist Church of Pomona and the Inspirational Choir; and she is involved in a host
of other community organizations. Jeanette is always known to “Give God the Glory” in everything she does.
